Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac outperformed competitor products in the independent tests!

Compared to Windows users, Mac users have been relatively unaffected by malware attacks. Cybercrooks, however, are just as aware as antivirus vendors are about Mac vulnerabilities. With the growing number of Mac users, cybercrooks see more potential for malicious activities, especially as Mac users tend to have a false sense of security and not usesecurity software. You only have to read this blog to learn that cybercrooks are adapting Windows malware to target their Mac counterparts.

We should never underestimate Mac security. Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac offers free protection against the latest malware designed to attack Mac operating systems. As all other Avast security products, the Mac version participates in frequent, independent tests. Recently avast! Free Antivirus for Mac was not only certified by AV-TEST but it also received 100% in the latest Mac Security Test & Review conducted by AV-Comparatives in July-August.

We are proud to share the results with you!

AVAST is top choice for mobile and PC security worldwide

Respected testing lab AV-Comparatives ranks AVAST as the most popular provider of both mobile security and antivirus protection in North America, South America, and Europe, and gaining in Asia.

AVcomp mobile security

“This survey highlights that AVAST is the most popular name in security in the world,” said Vincent Steckler, CEO of AVAST Software. “We proudly protect more than 210 million devices from hackers, thieves, spies and even governments.”

The rankings came from the fourth annual global survey released at the end of February. In the survey, AV-Comparatives states that internet usage among home and business users is growing, but how people access the internet is changing. Smartphone and tablet sales have increased, while laptop and desktop sales are on the decline. This means that the focus of cybercrooks is changing too.

Android owners are vulnerable without security protection

Mobile device owners are steadily realizing that the threat to their security is increasing. The survey confirms that the amount of mobile devices protected by security software is significantly lower than that of desktop devices, especially in North America.

“User awareness of mobile malware is dangerously low; yet in 2013, our virus lab found more than 1,850 new pieces of mobile malware a day,” commented Mr. Steckler. Read more…

avast! Free Antivirus is Top Rated product of 2013

post-top-rated

Throughout the year, independent testing labs run antivirus products through the rigors of “real-world’ testings as well as simulations and testing of specific features and performance. avast! Free Antivirus was honored as the Top Rated Program of 2013 by one of the most respected antivirus testing labs, AV-Comparatives.  Tests during 2013 were carried out on 22 consumer antivirus and internet security products. AVAST always puts our free product up against our competitor’s paid-for products because we are confident that the technology can stand up to the competition. The honors we received validate that.

Explaining the reasoning behind pitting a free antivirus product against paid-for suites, AVAST Software co-founder, Eduard Kučera said, “Our philosophy is we should not be a good product, but a perfect product. We provide the community with a perfect product.”

AV-Comparatives awards given to avast! Free Antivirus in 2013

  • Top Rated Program of 2013 avast! Free Antivirus proves that it protects against real-world internet threats, it identifies thousands of recent malicious programs, and provides protection without slowing down the PC. See report (PDF).

How do I know which antivirus is the best?

howto2_enQuestion of the week: How do I know which antivirus is the best for my computer? I mostly use it for staying in touch with my friends, doing schoolwork and watching videos. Is your free product good enough to protect me?

We receive questions like yours on our Facebook page frequently. We understand how difficult choosing which security product is right for you when the technology is unfamiliar and the marketing messages are similar.

That’s where independent testing labs like AV-Comparatives can help. A few times a year, these experts set up a “real-world’ test in their lab where they test dozens of antivirus products on identical computers.

AV-C_adv+_dec2013avast! Free Antivirus was the only free product to receive AV-Comparatives highest award in the ADVANCED Plus category because of exemplary results in protecting against malicious samples with a small incidence of false positives (wrongly blocking domains or files). The other Advanced Plus recipients were paid-for products (that shows how good avast! Free Antivirus is! ;-)).

For this “real-world” test, AV-Comparatives, together with the University of Innsbruck’s Computer Science department, set up identical Dell computers with Windows 7, Office, Adobe Reader, Flash, Java, QuickTime, Firefox, and a constant  internet connection – basically, like most of us have at home. Twenty-two products, of which only two were free, including avast! Free Antivirus, were tested. As you can see from the award, avast! Free Antivirus held it’s own, so yes, this product is more than good enough to protect your computer.

Notable among the test results is Microsoft Security Essentials, which placed last. AV-Comparatives only used it as a basis of comparison, because Microsoft withdrew it from testing this year.  This product provides only basic malware protection and has been the source of much conversation since earlier this year when Microsoft advised Windows users to use a third-party antivirus instead of counting on MSE. Since then they have changed their statement. Nevertheless, MSE’s scores in malware detection have continued to slide.

We hope you choose avast!, the most trusted antivirus in the world

No matter which antivirus product you decide to go with, make sure you keep it up-to-date, as well as keeping the software and apps on your machines updated. We hope you will choose avast! Free Antivirus or one of our premium products. You can see a comparison of all the choices on our website. If you want to see how avast! stacks up against others, then check out the avast! comparison tool on our Facebook page.

avast! Free Antivirus is the best deal for the Real World

In the “real world” of monthly bills and rising expenses, a decision about antivirus protection often comes down to the best protection for the money – and that’s where avast! Free Antivirus wins out over the rest.

In the May 2013 Real-World Protection Test by AV-Comparatives, avast! Free Antivirus was up against 19 paid-for internet security suites which could cost the customer up to  $60 per year. avast! Free Antivirus passed the tests with honors and was the only free solution to receive the Advanced+ rating!

The test created a real-world scenario using a typical setup that many of us have; Windows 7 and software such as Adobe Flash and Acrobat Reader, Java, etc.  To show how well antivirus products protect the user’s computer when surfing the web, the testers pitted AVAST and the others against threats we encounter in everyday life. They used  431 current dangerous exploits, URLs with known malware, and even a few malicious files from email attachments. avast! Free Antivirus blocked 99.3% of the threats.

2013 AV-Comparatives Security Survey: Great news for AVAST

Results of the AV-Comparatives 2013 Security Survey (pdf) are in, and once again AVAST leads among consumer preferences. Since AV-Comparatives is an independent testing firm, we always look forward to what they have to say. Here are some highlights:

According to survey respondents, AVAST remains the most widely used antivirus solution worldwide, claiming first place as the most used computer antivirus in Europe and South/Central America. :)

We are also glad to report that AVAST is the only brand to be among the top three most-used brands in all four global regions surveyed. ;)

At the time this survey was conducted, AVAST was protecting just over 184 million PCs, Macs, and mobile devices.

avast! only Free Antivirus to receive “ADVANCED+” award for Performance and Detection

Avast! Free Antivirus won the top rating for malware removal from independent research organization AV-Comparatives last month, and this month is the only antivirus solution that also received the ADVANCED+ award for performance. The latest performance test measured the impact on system resources and speed of 19 antivirus products, and avast! Free Antivirus was the best scoring FREE product again.

AV-Comparatives performance testing is a series of real-world scenarios that includes downloading, extracting, copying, and encoding files, installing and launching applications, in addition to an automated testing suite. The ranking system is three-levels: “Standard,” “Advanced” and “Advanced+” awards. To receive the “Advanced+” award, avast! Free Antivirus was compared to mostly paid-for antivirus suites based on how much impact the product has on system resources, including protection against ‘real-world’ zero-day malware attacks, detection of a representative set of malware discovered in the last 2-3 months, false positive rates, and scanning speed. Avast was the highest scoring free product and out-shined a host of paid-for products and other free products.

These results are proof that it is not necessary to pay for excellent quality antivirus protection.  Avast! Free Antivirus provides award-winning high protection rates against malware without degrading the system performance or troubling users.

AVAST is the only Free Antivirus to receive Advanced+ Award from AV Comparatives

AVAST Software received the highest ADVANCED+ Award Certification in the latest published independent tests by Anti-Virus Comparatives. The awarded avast! Free Antivirus 7.0 was the only free antivirus solution to achieve this result, competing among traditional paid-for antivirus tools.

AV Comparatives awards the certification based on a combination of high detection score and avoidance of so-called False Positives. “We did very well in both categories,” said Vincent Steckler, CEO of AVAST Software.  “I’m pleased to say that since 2010, when we decided to submit our free version to compete against the paid solutions, we have achieved the highest award every time but once.”

Panda PR tells us avast! – and 7 others – rank better than “best”

A press release from Panda Security, dated June, 21, 2012, properly goes straight to the point in its headline:

Panda Internet Security 2012 Ranks as Best-Performing Antivirus in Recent AV-Comparatives Evaluation

What the headline and accompanying ‘news’ fail to mention is that Panda scored among best-performing antivirus software in the AV-Comparatives test, but still only tied F-Secure for seventh (7th) place – coming in under Tencent (6th), Qihoo (5th), AVIRA and Sophos (tied for 4th), ESET (3rd), avast! (2nd), and Webroot (1st).
