We email, chat, Tweet, Facebook , and IM to simply communicate in a digital world with other people. Our communication is speeding up and we use more channels to receive information we are looking for. And there is nothing wrong with it, as the Internet helps us to communicate faster, cheaper and obviously more efficiently. However, isn’t it nice to receive a real postcard sent from holidays? Or come back from work and find a note “Stop by for a coffee, I got your email” left on our door from a neighbor?
Last week, at AVAST Software we have received a letter. No, no, this is not what you are thinking of. A real LETTER delivered by the postal service! A handwritten letter from 9-year old Polish boy, living in Ireland. Hubert send us not only greetings, but also a request for Virus Lab analysis! He made our day and his letter has been circulating around the company for the last few days.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here we go:
Hubert, we have your address and these fun AVAST souvenirs will be sent to you!
But, if you read this message meanwhile, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and write us in English or Polish! I will be waiting for your email in a virtual world.
Thank you for using avast! Antivirus and recommending us to your friends and family. For all the latest news, fun and contest information, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Business owners – check out our business products.
2013 was a very productive and successful year at AVAST Software. We released two versions of the consumer products: avast! V8 and avast! 2014, celebrated our 25th anniversary, and are protecting an incredible 200 million devices! It was a wonderful year for us, and we shared a summary of our milestones in December’s post.
2014 is already kicking and most of us has started it with great New Year resolutions: “Eat healthy”, “Regularly visit gym”, “Call your family and friends once a week”, “Quit smoking”… We, at AVAST made our New Year resolution as well. Here it is:
While the developers, Virus Lab researchers, and Quality Assurance teams are working towards this goal, we in the marketing team do our best to communicate to You - the AVAST users – what we are working on.
You can influence what we will be talking about on our Facebook page with over 3,6 million fans! Read more…
The AVAST forum is one of our largest and most active communities, with more than 300,000 users. The most active people on the forum are called Evangelists. They spend a great deal of their free time answering user questions and helping to sort out issues of all kinds. You can meet them on the AVAST forum, where you can get assistance and support any time.
Because of the Evangelists’ extensive experience and knowledge, we asked them to share their top tips on maintaining a secure computer or device. Here are their main tips:
- Keep Windows and all other programs up-to-date (especially browsers and avast! Antivirus) and use only official sites for updating. For more convenience, you can use the avast! Software Updater feature to do it. Avoid P2P, cracks, patches and pirated software. On Android, use Google Play as the app source.
- Don’t be a happy clicker, especially on social media sites and while installing programs. Always install programs via the custom mode and read the screens before clicking next. If something looks fishy, it probably is.
- Take care about the sites you visit, knowing that legitimate websites can also be hacked. Use avast! SafeZone for web browsing whenever possible, especially while using online banking. AVAST also provides a full isolated environment called avast! Sandbox.
- Use different and strong passwords: Numbers, upper and lower case letters, symbols, etc. avast! EasyPass could help you manage this.
- Keep your anti-malware protection always on, for instance, while gaming and installing programs. Community games are usually safer than the supposed official games you find online. Take extra care – or avoid completely – free public cheats for multiplayer games, especially downloaded from third party URLs.
- Be alert for social engineering scams and emails. Do not open attachments from an unknown sender. Remember that not everyone is really your friend. Always use common sense.
- Have backup strategies: When, what, local and remote. Remember: Better safe than sorry. AVAST offers an online backup solution too.
- Use a firewall that manages the access of applications to the internet. Take care on open WiFi hotspots. At home, be sure to use strong WiFi passwords.
Special thanks to our AVAST forum members who have contributed these tips: Bob, Charyb, Essexboy, Omid, George Yves, Iroc, Donovan, Polonus, Ylap, Mac, Para-Noid, Coolmario, Dwarden and Jeffce. If you ever have a question, please log on to the AVAST forum and ask. Our forum evangelists are happy to assist you.

Football is fun! It’s exciting, it brings us together… to share, to enjoy, to be proud (or ashamed?) of our favorite teams. Simply put, it creates a spirit of community. And we at AVAST Software realize how important community is. We also know that AVAST has a community of 22,000,000 users in Brazil. Given the fact that Brazil has 200,000,000 inhabitants, shall we say that AVAST protects every 10th football fan in Brazil?
This inspired us to organize a survey in selected countries that were participating in the Confederation Cup that took place in Brazil between 15-30 July. We have asked our Spanish, Brazilian, and Mexican avast! users three questions:
1. Are you going to watch the Confederations Cup match?
2. Which team will be crowned the Confederations Cup champion?
3. Which team will have the worst result in the Confederations Cup?
Following users are awarded for participating and predicting correct results as first. Congratulations to the winners, we will contact you via email!
|Date of participation||Time of participation||Name||Country|
Now, see how the survey engaged AVAST users and how participants actually responded!
Six months since its launch in the US (a pilot country), AVAST Free for Education covers nearly 2 million computers and servers belonging to over 1,400 schools, districts, universities, libraries, and other educational institutions. At market price, these institutions are saving $20 million per year by getting the AVAST enterprise-level protection for free. In other words, we are freeing up about $20 million of the schools’ budgets that the schools could use for the students’ benefit. Read more…
Results of the AV-Comparatives 2013 Security Survey (pdf) are in, and once again AVAST leads among consumer preferences. Since AV-Comparatives is an independent testing firm, we always look forward to what they have to say. Here are some highlights:
According to survey respondents, AVAST remains the most widely used antivirus solution worldwide, claiming first place as the most used computer antivirus in Europe and South/Central America.
We are also glad to report that AVAST is the only brand to be among the top three most-used brands in all four global regions surveyed.
At the time this survey was conducted, AVAST was protecting just over 184 million PCs, Macs, and mobile devices.
To make the above news even better, the survey’s respondents requested AVAST as their top interest for future testing. Read more…
As most of our readers and fans know, we now protect more devices (PC, Mac, and Android) globally than any other antivirus provider.
As our business model is such that our freemium software serves as our ‘advertising’ (we don’t do traditional advertising), and most of our users come to us via referrals, we receive quite a bit of thanks from avast! users around the world.
And as our software is available in about 40 languages, we hear from grateful people in Spanish, German, Russian, French, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Polish, English, and of course, in addition to a few others, the native Czech of the land where we are headquartered.
For years we put selections of this positive feedback on our webpages at avast.com. But recently the world has been shifting toward social media based feedback, which means we don’t hear as much from avast! users through our web contact form (and that’s ok!).
But now and then we still do. And occasionally a message really catches our eye. Today, that message came from Wyoming, USA, in perfect ‘cowboy’ speak. Read more…

AVAST Software Announces Winner of its Latest Facebook-Based Promotion
To promote the release of new avast! version 7, AVAST Software ran a promotion for a lucky user to win seven days in ‘paradise’, an all-inclusive holiday for the winner to a destination of his or her dreams. To win, participants had to enter the promotion on www.facebook.com/avast and estimate correctly what the avast! active user base would be two months later. Surprisingly, eight participants actually got the correct number of 150,107,324 active users.
However, it was Daniel Santos do Nascimento from Maceió in Brazil who picked the correct number nearly 7 weeks earlier. “I thought of it like a maths test,” explains Daniel, “I looked at the last 6 months number of active users and used the approximate growth to estimate the probable next number – but to be honest, I was just lucky!”
Daniel, an avast! user for over three years, decided to let his wife choose the destination, “My wife has always wanted to go Rio de Janeiro and this opportunity has allowed her dreams to come true,”
Daniel, his wife and son are now planning their all expenses paid trip and avast is now planning a bigger competition to coincide with the registration of the 200 millionth user which based on strong growth could well take place in 2012.
