Today, we received an email from one of the four winners of last December’s Facebook game Member Gets Member. The object of the game was to introduce your friends to avast! Antivirus by inviting them to our Facebook page. When your friends liked our page, you earned points, and earned points gave you the chance to win a cool new Windows Surface tablet. That’s exactly what Micah, from the Philippines, did.
Attached here is my picture with the Microsoft Surface tablet. I am very thankful of having such reward. But not only that, I am very thankful also of using Avast as my antivirus because it’s very fine and does excellent performance for my devices. Do you have 2 hours a day that you can fully dedicate to avast! social media? Can you be the eyes and ears of avast! in your country as if your own reputation depended on it?
We seek a highly motivated individual with experience and fanatical passion for blogging, micro-blogging and community participation to simply communicate with avast! followers in your mother tongue. You will help us approach new users in your country, so we can spread avast! Free Antivirus across the globe!

They say size doesn’t matter… however, at Twitter it actually does! How can you express yourself, knowing that you MUST use no more than 140 characters? How can you tell everything about Avast and still fit within this number? How can you respond to Avast users knowing this limitation? Well, by setting up and communicating daily via our avast! Twitter account, we have accepted this challenge and now we have one for you… But before we get there, let me tell why you should start following us on Twitter.
It is a credit to the quality of our Facebook and Twitter fans that so many take the time to write us with appreciation and praise. It is extremely meaningful for us to receive your feedback, positive or negative, but we are especially motivated and thrilled to learn when we are satisfying our customers. Here are some examples of messages we have received lately on social media. Thanks to all who have written to us.
In October 2012, the same week that Avast reached the milestone of 2 million likes on Facebook, Vince Steckler, CEO of Avast Software, approved the creation of a social media “listening post” using Socialbakers powerful suite of analytical, listening and publishing tools. Avast is Socialbakers 1000th customer. A small, but dedicated, community team works on communications, content creation, customer care, and marketing from Avast headquarters in the Czech Republic and a satellite office in the United States.

We like to think that the avast! voice telling us that our virus database has been updated is almost like a pleasant song, something to cheer us all up, reminding us that nobody needs to sing the PC blues.
So it’s great to know we’re not alone, and that our users also think this way. Here’s an example by “Ferrett Steinmetz,” an Ohio-based writer, who recently tweeted:

You’ve probably seen applications for generating passwords. For those who have not, this is how the process actually works:
- application for generating passwords is downloaded
- user runs the application and presses the “generate” button
- a string appears that looks something like this: I8kjH9s&ER1()G
- this string is used as a password for his Mail / Facebook / Twitter / …
And now, the user has two options:
- he’ll forget his new password immediately
- to ensure that the new password is not forgotten, he’ll write it down on a sticker and put it on the computer monitor. If the user has other computer-generated passwords, he will place this “my email” sticker on top of the existing stickers.
So what’s the deal? Why am I telling you this? Because in a moment, we’re going to learn how to create secure passwords – and you’ll see that you are going to change passwords more often than you have previously. Because creating passwords can be fun.
In recent years, the need for a Community Manager has become essential, especially when your entire business operates online and your ‘community’ is a global one. Julia was an excellent choice for this position at AVAST, as her experiences both as a traveler and living as a foreigner have given her insight into the myriad ways communications take shape. I’ve worked closely with her on various projects, and she has a natural ability to empathize with community concerns, promote community interests, and ensure that the avast! 1. I recall that one of our first conversations was about your studies of literature and languages, and so I’m curious how a background in humanities helps you in your current role as Community Manager for AVAST?
The fact that I manage to communicate in several languages helps a lot. But, frankly, I would need to learn at least another 8 languages to be able to cover typical daily communications, as the community of our fans is very multilingual. The first thing that came to mind after reading this question was the “KIS rule”: KEEP IT SIMPLE. Twitter limits you to 140 characters and Facebook to 420, so you’re forced you to follow that rule. It confirms what I already suspected attending university: make your text as simple as possible.
