Dear Download Scammers… GAME OVER

shutterstock_107284424I get asked this question pretty often: “Soooo IF you do not spend any money on advertising, or on retail presence, and nothing on pre-installations and OEMs, then how do you get new users?

Well, most often thanks to word-of-mouth. It goes something like this:

Step 1: The need

A PC user with an expiring or troublesome antivirus figures out he has a need for new security. (This does not happen to Mac users because of course they DO know Macs don’t need any AV…  ;)

Step 2: The call

A PC user calls his favorite geek or IT friend who knows EVERYTHING about computers. Yes, a PC user could also make the effort and learn about it himself, read some reviews, check some comparative tests, and so on, but that takes too much time.

Step 3: The advice

“get avast free antivirus …” OR “download avast free” OR “install avast home version”. Then your friendly geek hangs up because his time is valuable.

Step 4: The what?

The PC user is not really sure what it was he needs to do or where to go or how to spell it, but for this we have Google. So, he googles it out. Voila! Easy!

Step 5: Download

Google lists out the search results, the PC user goes to any of the top links, clicks-through to AVAST page and downloads avast! Free Antivirus. Some 15 million people do this every month, and right after they would choose install>accept>next>next>finish>thank you. Read more…

Quality not quantity. Spammers you could do hell better than this

Spam_In any line of business – and I guess this is not only common sense but also part of any basic “marketing 101” class – you will learn that it’s important to know WHO your customers are.  So I’m surprised that in the spam-sending business the spammers haven’t figured that one out yet. And I mean it.  Their customer-understanding, user-insights and target-group-defining in general are just BAD.  In fact, it’s so bad that if they don’t get better fast they might just go out of business…

Creative recommendations win 10 AVAST users $1000 each

post01 (1)The AVAST recommendation contest brought 145,000 new members to the AVAST Community! More than 20,000 people entered the contest and approximately 10% of those entries were think-out-of-the-box creative submissions! Users from USA, Brazil, Russia, India, France, Spain, Poland, India, Germany and many other countries showed us  their creativity; ideas to spread the word about avast! Free Antivirus.

We received videos, links to blogs, websites, poems, creative images, and descriptions of creative recommendations tactics. It took us time to verify all the entries because of the diverse languages, but also due to lots of brainstorming and discussions. The decision wasn’t easy, but we looked at various factors and made a huge effort to judge objectively. Our criteria were simple: We focused on creative or innovative concepts and the quality of its execution. It wasn’t an easy choice, but we came to a consensus, and it’s time to announce winners now.

Thanks to all the participants. We appreciate and value your time and effort in sending us your ideas!

Dimitri B’s creative diorama provoked discussion about how we could create outdoor sculptures,or temporary displays illustrating unprotected devices and those protected by avast! security products. Here’s his sketch idea:

avast! Free Antivirus is the most popular download of 2013

download-2013During the launch of avast! 2014 in October, CEO Vincent Steckler told a group of international journalists, “On all the download sites around the world, this year, through the end of September, we have 143 million downloads. That’s the most downloaded product – period.”

After a few more months, the highest profile download site, CNET’s download.com, confirmed that statement with an article, Top downloads of 2013, which proclaimed that avast! Free Antivirus was their most popular app for 2013, with more than 53 million downloads for Windows and nearly 1 million for Mac.

You can download files from download.com’s software, mobile, and game libraries choosing from more than 150,000 titles. Downloads are rated by registered users, as well as reviewed by editors. The editors awarded avast! Free Antivirus 2014 four and half stars.

This year’s Avast release has distinguished itself as not just a malware or antivirus solution, but also as a full-on security monitor for your machine.
