Beware what you share

I have Social Disease. I have to go out every night. If I stay home one night I start spreading rumors to my dogs. ~ Andy Warhol

Party time is here. It starts with Halloween and continues with different occasions such as St. Nicolas Day, Christmas parties, New Years Eve and on through the huge fiesta of Carnival. We all love to get together, celebrate with our families, friends,  have fun and to… SHARE with our friends on social networks. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as you are aware of the consequences and share wisely.

Let’s face it, we are not all PR specialists. Social networks however, are our private PR zone. Imagine that your Facebook profile is a cover of a huge magazine like Time or People. Sounds silly? Well, not really. Given the fact, that our profiles are exposed to the public, and often checked by our potential or current employers, it is very important to take into consideration what kind of content we share.

Once you are at the Halloween (or any other) party, consider switching off your internet access. Have fun enjoy yourself, but wait until posting anything to the  next day. Under the light of day (and post-hangover) your picture might look different than you anticipated. :)

AVAST team gets together to work and to celebrate!

The release last week of the new #avast2014 became a great opportunity to get our global team together.  Members of the Social Media and Communication team met in the HQ of AVAST Software in beautiful Prague. Our team normally works remotely and its members are spread in different countries: Czech Republic, USA, Spain, and Germany. Finally, we all met at once, to work together, exchange ideas, and to celebrate.

Preparation for the release, coordinating communication, and organizing the international press conference as well as coordinating social media activities was our major focus. It was hard work but we found time to be together sight seeing in Prague.  It was a great way to get to know each other better and simply have fun.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so check it out. Also, see the gallery of pictures on our avast! Facebook page.

The Social Media team concentrated hard on tweeting from the press conference. Live stream #avast2014!

How to use new graph search on Facebook?

facebook-suchmaschine-graph-searchOn September 30th, Facebook introduced changes on the New Graph Search. Currently available only on desktops, it will be rolled out in phases. Since its release in January 2013, Graph Search has gone through a great transformation. Users are now allowed to search for status history, images, check-ins, comments -  basically anything. The goal is to provide users with enhanced search options, so they can find interesting information without leaving the social network.

How does Facebook Graph Search work?

The top search bar works similarly to a browser search engine. The exception is that it searches within Facebook itself and  requires specific search commands to make your search successful. For example, imagine you are a passionate bowler. You would like to set up a bowling team, however you don’t know any fellow bowlers in your hometown. Now you can log in on Facebook and search using the following search terms:

People who checked in at Bowling Alleys in Los Angeles, California

You will see all your friends who may have gone bowling without your knowledge,  as well as other people, you may or may not know, who checked in. You can interact with them and, for example, establish a Facebook Interest group, to finally create your dream bowling team.

Another example: You love to travel and you would like to investigate places you are planning to visit ahead. Search for:

Images taken in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

to preview all public pictures of the place you want to visit. Moreover you can see the comments, recommendations, and tips from others. A final example:

TV shows my friends who live in Dallas, Texas like Read more…

5 questions with: Carlos Dreyfus

1267990_10100352145636202_1137362075_o „Carlos Dreyfus joined AVAST Software in January 2013, to support our multicultural marketing team. Carlos is American with a Colombian background. He moved to Prague from Berlin and before lived in a Sunny Florida, where he graduated from the University of North Florida. Carlos is a passionate football player, beer fan (Germany and Czech Republic are not coincident destination!) and a surfer. He brought not only great professional experience, but also energetic and optimistic Latino spirit into our team. We are very pleased to introduce Carlos to you!“

What is your role at AVAST Software?

I’m the User Experience Specialist for all things marketing.  The job role consists of listening to our users and modifying portions of our website using their feedback, also the position involves creating web things from scratch that give a more positive web experience.  Think of me as the person that makes portions of our website fun, educational, easy to use, etc.

How did an American get to Prague and find his niche at AVAST?

That question comes with a very long story, but I’ll try my best to keep it short.  While traveling the world while finishing graduate school I realized that I wanted to be in Europe, so than I pursued a profession in technology, specifically in web since the internet is everywhere.  After working as a consultant in UX and then as a product manager in eCommerce, I landed this cool job at AVAST Software.  What I’ve done in the past fits nicely with what I’m doing now, it couldn’t have worked out any better.

What do you consider the biggest and most exciting challenge at AVAST Software?

We have almost 200 million users, so the idea of being able to enhance their web experience on avast.com seemed like pretty fun challenge, so as the famous Barney Stinson would say: Challenge Accepted…

Do you have anything exciting coming up? Read more…

How to avoid becoming a phone scam victim

HELLO. This is Microsoft tech support and we have detected a serious virus in your computer and we need you to log on right away so we can help you.

shutterstock_95818504

Have you ever received a phone call like this, without actually requesting support? The call itself should already raise your suspicions. However, when you are asked to provide your personal data or credit card credentials, warning lights should be flashing.

Recently journalists, bloggers, and even Microsoft itself warned against the “Microsoft calling scam.” The Microsoft phone scam is just one example of thousands of similar offers reported daily. Scammers can be very creative and do not hesitate to take advantage of people’s trust. They are well prepared and trained, so we need to beware and ready to react fast.

What should raise you suspicions?

  • You receive a call with an offer of a service you never requested
  • You receive a call / email / social media message claiming you won a prize from a contest you have never participated in
  • The person contacting you is very insistent and wants you to provide access to your personal data or pay in order to receive support or a prize
  • The person contacting you doesn’t provide his/her full contact details
  • The person contacting you requests access to your PC, personal information, or credit card.

What to do, if you suspect it’s a scam
