AVAST demonstrates everyday security techniques at Mobile World Congress!

MWC2014Mobile World Congress (#MWC14) starts today in Barcelona, Spain! It’s an exciting and must-visit event for the entire mobile industry, and of course, the AVAST mobile security team is participating.

Between February 24th-27th, visitors to AVAST booth – 5K29 in Hall 5 will learn how to stay safe from spying eyes and rampant security flaws including Apple’s recent exploit. We have prepared an interesting program, including live previews of all avast! SecureLine VPN and avast! Mobile Security features.

At the booth, the multi-lingual team will educate visitors  about how AVAST’s various security products (for PC, Android, and iOS) can protect you from malicious programs regardless of origin or type, including malware from governments and official institutions. Products on display are:

avast! Secureline VPN

Visitors will learn how to use avast! Secureline VPN to anonymize public WiFi browsing.  SecureLine is effective protection against hackers and spies accessing personal data and browsing activities as well as the threat of “man-in-the-middle-attacks” from the recent Apple SSL encryption bug.

avast! Mobile Security

The AVAST team will teach you how to use avast! Mobile Security to protect your Android devices from spies and hackers, avoid data loss, as well as defend against device theft, and malicious programs – including spy-agency malware that is whitelisted by others.

avast! Anti-Theft

The team will also explain how avast! Anti-Theft works. You will learn how to view the location of a lost or stolen phone, activate an alarm, delete personal data to prevent unauthorized access, and even take photos of any thief and record their voice in order to recover a stolen device.

For the press

Journalists interested in speaking to an AVAST expert at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, can meet up with our Security Experts.  To arrange a meeting, contact our PR manager Marina Ziegler via email at ziegler@avast.com or tweet her at @Marina_Z.

You’ve Got Mail!

We email, chat, Tweet, Facebook , and IM to simply communicate in a digital world with other people. Our communication is speeding up and we use more channels to receive information we are looking for. And there is nothing wrong with it, as the Internet helps us to communicate faster, cheaper and obviously more efficiently. However, isn’t it nice to receive a real postcard sent from holidays? Or come back from work and find a note “Stop by for a coffee, I got your email” left on our door from a neighbor?

Last week, at AVAST Software we have received a letter. No, no, this is not what you are thinking of. A real LETTER delivered by the postal service! A handwritten letter from 9-year old Polish boy, living in Ireland. Hubert send us not only greetings, but also a request for Virus Lab analysis! He made our day and his letter has been circulating around the company for the last few days.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here we go:

AVAST Privacy IQ quiz: answers

AVAST Privacy IQ Quiz has finished.  Before we will officially announce the winners, please check how you should answer and learn why!

header

Do privacy policies guarantee that your information will be kept private?

Correct answer: No
A typical privacy policy includes information about the types of data the company collects and how it analyzes, discloses and stores the data; it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that your information will be kept private. Furthermore, companies can change their policy at any time – so what you initially agreed to may no longer be valid in the future.

Which of these are not recommended to share while using a public WiFi connection?

A. Your credit card

B. Your bank account information

C. Your social security number

D. All of the above

Correct answer:  All of the above
Get savvy about WiFi hotspots: Limit the type of business you conduct and adjust the security settings on your device to limit who can access your machine. For the maximum security, use new avast! SecureLine VPN for Android and iOS.

You really need to purchase a late birthday gift for your friend online but you are away on vacation. You have paid for a hotel public WiFi connection so your personal information will be secure. It’s ok to purchase a gift for your friend while using the hotel public WiFi.

Correct answer: False
Just because you purchase access to a public WiFi connection does not make it secure. Get savvy about WiFi hotspots: Limit the type of business you conduct and adjust the security settings on your device to limit who can access your machine.

What is the best way to use social networking sites?

A. Set the privacy and security settings to your personal comfort level for information sharing.

B. Avoid sharing compromising photos and information.

C. You don’t have to rely on default security settings every time

D. Option A and B

Correct answer: Option A and B

Own your online presence. When available, set the privacy and security settings on websites to your comfort level for information sharing. It’s OK to limit how and with whom you share information.

Once I set my privacy settings on a product or service, I don’t need to set them again.

Correct answer: False
You need to check your privacy settings often. Updates for apps and software can change privacy preferences to a default setting.

All mobile apps that ask you to enable geolocation services require location data to function.

Correct answer: False
Many apps do not need geolocation services enabled in order to provide the service. Make sure you decline or opt-out of the location service feature on your phone. Protect your personal information by learning more about an app before you download. Get insights about installed apps and understand your apps’ access rights and intentions with Privacy Report & Apps Manager when you use avast! Free Mobile Security for Android. Read more…

5 security tips from an expert AVAST Evangelist

howto2_enEarlier this month we introduced you to AVAST Evangelist: Paulius Yla. With nearly 10 years of experience gained from supporting users on the AVAST forum, Paulius can be easily called an AVAST expert. He has been using our software since 2003 and participated in testing dozens of AVAST products. Paulius has shared with us 5 basic and MUST-FOLLOW security tips!

Check it out and don’t forget to follow these steps:

  • Antivirus software is a MUST. Don’t believe your friends if the say you don’t need it, it only slows your PC, and so on. It must be installed and must be up-to-date.
  • A Firewall must be enabled too, at least the integrated one.
  • Never use cracked illegal software, especially Operating Systems (OS). You will never know what backdoor can be included in it.
  • Never ignore OS updates, leave automatic updates on. Other software updates are also important. In most cases they are fixing bugs, security holes etc., and improving your internet security.
  • Believe me, the internet is a wild place, so try to avoid sites with a bad reputation or risky sites (peer-to-peer, adult sites, etc.) There is no AV solution which can protect you from 100% of threats, so use your head, too!

Meet Paulius Yla AVAST Evangelist

Lithuania is a small European Union country, located in Northeastern Europe. Nearly 10% of 3,000,000 Lithuanians are protected by avast! Antivirus. Among them is one special person: Paulius Yla, an AVAST Evangelist.

fr635249706757607162

Evangelist” is the term we use for those people who willingly volunteer their personal time and expertise to help others benefit from avast! Antivirus. The most active place for evangelists is on the AVAST forum.

NuotraukaFour years ago, we organized a big meeting for AVAST Evangelists in our Prague headquarters. It was a unique, emotional meeting for both sides: The AVAST team and the AVAST Evangelists. It was an opportunity to meet people we knew only from the cyberworld – The AVAST forum. This is when I met Paulius in person. Paulius, who under the username “YLAP”  on the AVAST forum, has been helping users precisely since  January 20, 2005, 02:48:04 PM. :) During his years on the forum,  Paulius has generated over 1,800 posts and helped countless of people. But the forum is not the only space where Paulius is active. You can also meet him on Facebook sharing useful tips, so do not hesitate to follow him, as Paulius is a great AVAST expert.

We value our evangelists greatly and there are no words to express our gratitude to Paulius and the others for all their work and for being “AVAST ambassadors” all over the world. In the past we have introduced you to Bob Gostischa (USA), Lisandro Carmona (Brazil) and Charlie O. Prince (USA). It’s time to meet more of the AVAST Evangelists and welcome them officially, and thank them for helping you also on social channels. Please say “Labas” (hi in Lithuanian) to Paulius and get to know one of our experts.

AVAST (teddy) has conquered Brazil!

blogBrazil is the only Portuguese speaking country in both South and Latin America. It is also fifth biggest country in the world, according to its geographical size and in terms of population. Brazilians represent a fascinating ethnic and cultural fusion, influenced by indigenous, European, African, and Asian cultures. With the upcoming World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic games in 2016, Brazil has become a center of interest from the economical and touristic perspective.

For AVAST Software, Brazil is the most important market. An incredible 28 million users (over 10% of entire population!) use avast! Antivirus to protect mobiles, notebooks, PCs, and Mac computers. avast! Free Antivirus is well recognized, popular and a much-loved brand in the country.

For me personally, Brazil was always a country of very friendly people, beautiful language, fantastic music (samba, bossa nova, forro), and fascinating cultural mixture. It was always on my traveling A-list.  I finally took the opportunity, and the avast! teddy bear :),  and went on my dream trip.

Below is short photo diary from all the gorgeous places, we had a pleasure to visit! I hope it will inspire you to:

a) Start following avast! teddy on Instagram

b) Discover Brazil :)

c) Recommend avast! Antivirus to your friends, as the Brazilians do! :)

We started our tour visiting the most popular site in Rio Corcovado. One of the World’s Seven Wonders, Christ the Redeemer was however hiding in the clouds.  It didn’t prevent our avast! teddy from enjoying it though!

Rio christ

The gorgeous Botanical Garden in Rio hosts thousands of exotic plants and animals. One of them was curious Macaca, who definitely became friends with the avast! teddy! Read more…
