12 angry minions

avast! GrimeFighter is one of the most popular new products among AVAST users.

However, many of you still don’t know the benefits of it or what avast! GrimeFighter does. Therefore we have prepared a series of articles with a “movie theme” to show you the functionality of our Grime-fighting minions! The first one, Learn everything you always wanted to know about avast! GrimeFighter, but were afraid to ask!, gave you an overview of product functionality. Now let’s dig a bit deeper into the subject.

12 Angry minions.

The Grime Fighter crew work together towards one goal: Cleaning and optimizing your PCs performance. They have no mercy for temporary and unwanted files and apps, including ‘bloatware’ and ‘crapware’. This is a very complicated task, therefore our 12 Angry minions analyze each element in depth before deleting anything that is actually important to you. This influences the time of the cleaning process (it takes up to 4 hours depending on the initial state of your PC), but also ensures results: A more efficient and faster machine. Although our minions make it look easy and entertaining, cleaning Grime so thoroughly is a complex task!
avast! GrimeFighter optimizes your PC better than other products.

For the same reason each minion has it’s specialization and focus on different tasks:

OFFICER PETE is head of the GrimeFighter team.

KOBAYASHI sneaks up on malware to eliminate it from your PC.

NIKITA specializes in cleaning and maintaining your web browser.

DALE JUMPSHOT JR. focuses on removing crapware and bloatware to speed up Windows load time.

BEEF strengthens the security of your applications.

TORQUE tuns up and optimizes Windows services and settings.

SIR JEFFREY investigates and analyzes your PC hardware components.

MARIO analyzes your network connection for security and speed.

DR. LIZA analyzes and classifies all of the stuff on your hard drive.

ZILCH takes out the trash on your PC to free up your drive space.

MAXIMUS analyzes and researches the newest hacking trends the instant they emerge, and  last but not least HOLMES focuses on your privacy settings.

The avast! Minions perform deep analysis, by booting your PC into Linux to identify Grime and clean every corner of your PC. Some forms of Grime are hard to remove when Windows is running, but can’t hide when we sedate your computer. Unwanted files and apps go by many names, including ‘bloatware’, ‘crapware’, and sometimes even half-jokingly using the name ‘virus.’ We define all of these as ‘Grime.’ The image below visualize Minions in action.

Minions in actions

To summarize: Computer users can download avast! GrimeFighter’s scan tool to have their PC examined for free. It finds anything that slows the PC. If users then want to clean their PCs, they may buy their own GrimeFighter license, to purge Grime from the PC. GrimeFighter’s minions do all the maintenance work… while you surf the web or sip a cup a tea. For more information, please visit our website.

How to use avast! Ransomware Removal?

howto2_en avast! Ransomware Removal removes SimpLocker, Cryptolocker, or any other type of ransomware from infected devices.

A few days ago, we announced a new app that kills Android ransomware. After being available on Google Play, the app has already been received with enthusiasm. We spotted some questions regarding the tool on social media and addressed them to our support team. In this article we will explain how to install, how to run the tool, and why it is important to uninstall it after AVAST has done its job! First, our COO explains what SimpLocker, on of Android’s dreaded ransomware, can do to your phone.

SimpLocker blocks access to files on infected mobile devices by encrypting them. Without our free ransomware removal tool, infected users have to pay $21 to regain access to their personal files. SimpLocker  is the first ransomware that actually encrypts files, so we developed a free tool for people to restore them. – said Ondrej Vlcek, Chief Operating Officer at AVAST Software.

1. How can I install the avast! Ransomware Removal tool if my mobile is already being blocked by the malware?

blog_arrThis is a very good question, and we know how to get around this. All users can install the app remotely, but must access Google Play from your computer, not your mobile device. Follow these simple steps:

  • Log in to Google Play with the same user information you use to log in to your phone
  • Find the avast! Ransomware Removal app
  • Click the “Install” button and the app will be installed on your device shortly

2. How do I can run the application?

  • After the app is installed on your phone, click the app name from within the notification bar
  • The app will run and provide you with further instructions
  • Run a scan and wait until it has successfully removed the ransomware
  • Uninstall the app at the end (you can install it again in the future if necessary).

3. Why am I prompted to uninstall avast! Ransomware Removal once I finish the scan and the ransomware has been removed?

This is one of the most frequent questions being asked by users, so we asked for more details from our experts. Here is an explanation from AVAST developer Jan Svehlak:

Ransomware locks users out of their devices, meaning the malware loads its ransom screen before other apps even have a chance to load. The avast! Ransomware Removal app needs to override the SimplLocker malware first, in order to access the device. However, if not uninstalled after the scan, it will continue to override all apps on the device, meaning it will block all other apps from opening. Therefore avast! Ransomware Removal needs to be uninstalled after accomplishing its task; unlocking your device.

Last, but not least, we believe that prevention is much more efficient than fixing an existing issue. To keep your devices protected from Cryptolocker, SimpLocker, and other ransomware, make sure to also install avast! Free Mobile Security & Antivirus from the Google Play store. It can detect and remove the malware before it is deployed.

Everything you always wanted to know about avast! GrimeFighter, but were afraid to ask!

GrimeFighter became one of the most popular new products among our users. However, many of you still don’t know the benefits of it or what avast! GrimeFighter does. Therefore we have prepared a series of articles to show you the functionality of our grime-fighting minions! Learn everything you always wanted to know about avast! They might look like funny characters from an animated movie. The minions, however, are serious warriors against all kind of dirt that accumulates on your computer over time. Removing “Grime” is quite a sophisticated process, and it must be done properly. Our minions must be very careful not to remove unnecessary items, as well as look through the entire system so as not to miss something.  Each of the characters play an important role in the cleaning process, to achieve one common goal: Speed up your PC and optimize it’s performance.  Meet the “mean and lean” GrimeFighter crew:

Your child on Facebook: learn about the privacy settings

Security matters to everyone, however security of our children is our top priority. We make sure that they are safe at school, home, and on the streets. Equally we need to provide them with a safe experience in the cyberworld. Recently, we published a blog about general online security of the children, which suggested that you take time and help your child with privacy settings on Facebook. Don’t worry, if you have no clue where to start, we will guide you through the labyrinth of sophisticated security and privacy settings settings. Follow our tips to secure yourself and your child on the most popular social network.

Privacy settings

Like other Internet giants, Facebook has been especially vulnerable to criticisms about privacy. In particular, critics have complained that even if you deactivate your account, the information can still remain on the network and be subject to web searches.~ comments Mashable in the article on recent Facebook privacy update

Following users’ complaints regarding privacy issues, Facebook decided to change the default settings of your status updates to be the visible for Friends only instead of Public. This however applies to Facebook newbies only! So if you and your children are already users, you still have a job to do! :)
Security shortcut

Facebook regularly updates its settings and as a result your profile settings can be restored to the default. In terms of  privacy it means: Everything is PUBLIC. Therefore it’s extremely important to review your profile regularly . You will not be able to influence everything, however there are an advanced number of settings that can be fully controlled by you. The three basic areas that you should focus on are:

  1. 1. Who can see your posts and images?
  2. 2. Who can contact you?
  3. 3. How you can help your child block harassing Facebook friends.

You will find this setting in the right top corner on the blue bar, in the Privacy Shortcuts section. Click on the See More Settings to open the window below and follow our suggestions.

Behind the CARO conference’s curtains: Meet AVAST speakers!

For seven years, the CARO Workshop has been hosted in Europe. It is an outstanding technical meeting, attended by some of the best malware researchers in the world. In 2014, the CARO workshop comes to America. ~CARO’s conference official website

We are proud and happy to introduce you to our AVAST speakers and Security Experts from the Virus Lab. Peter Kálnai and Filip Chytrý are going to CARO’s (Computer Antivirus Research Organization) workshop to“Declare war against Android Malware.” We sat together and talked about their presentation, mobile malware, and general trends in the security industry.

Meet our security experts: Peter and Filip.

The theme for this year’s CARO conference is Mobile Space: Malware in a mobile world. As security experts, what changes and specific trends in malware development have you observed?

FILIP Well, this may sound cliché,  but the amount of mobile threats are rising and more sophisticated attacks appear every day. A few years ago, we would observe mostly primitive malware with only one or two capabilities such as to send paid SMS or track your movements. Now, however we have malware that can root your phone and became a device administrator, or command and control Apps which take control of your device by attackers. That’s why I believe we can stay tuned for more conferences concentrated on Android malware.  CARO is first, but hopefully not the last, conference focused on Android and mobile threats.

PETER I can’t recollect a different example, but this year’s CARO Workshop seems to be the first IT security conference completely devoted to mobile malware. The topic of our talk reflects trends in the Android threat landscape. Security experts nowadays observe an increased ratio of total malicious Android packages to unique malware families. Two particular cases appear most: The expansion of usage of Android packers and repackaging benign application with malicious code, so called piggybacking. Read more…

#AVASTteambuilding: Our orange crew chases the Northern Lights!

Saturday morning at 7:30 AM, 130 orange antivirus soldiers met up at the Prague Airport. We were flying to Tromsø, a city north of the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. For the next 24 hours there won’t be any sleeping or a hot shower. Instead, our plan is to chase the aurora borealis (aka the Northern Lights) and most importantly get to know each other better and have fun. Check out our pictures and to see more, like us on Facebook.

#avastTeamBuilding!

On the plane an intellectual challenge awaited for the team in the form of a mathematical/analytical puzzle. The strongest AVAST brains were struggling for the correct answer for more than one hour.  We had to work in teams to figure out the correct answer and the winners received the new Google Glass! Even the food was branded and secured by AVAST.

After three hours flying,  we landed safely 2000 km North from Prague in Tromsø. The AVAST “orange gang” became an attraction for the locals.

Our very first stop was at Villmarkssenter. To  our surprise the local guides were expecting us in the….orange outfit! We got to know how the Alaskan husky station works, and had plenty of time to play and cuddle with the friendly dogs. We promise that nothing happened to the one called “Virus!” :)
