AVAST acquires mobile security app developer ITAgents

For those interested in all things Android, I have some exciting news. AVAST Software has acquired ITAgents, the Austrian developer of the Theft Aware mobile phone theft protection and recovery system.

The acquisition strengthens AVAST’s technology base and gives us a hands-on security app designed for today’s Android-powered smartphones. Read more…

Joining the team. Our new and only Motion Graphics Designer

That’s right, we now have our very own video animator in the marketing team. We will be able to produce in-house videos and share them with you. I guess we will cover various subjects from showing and explaining how a particular program features work to addressing unique events in the life of our company or anything else worth of sharing. Record high Google Search Share for AVAST

My daughter went on a week-long school trip today morning. She and 30 other kids will visit Switzerland, France and Germany. It is school trip in Europe by bus and that means leaving early to avoid the traffic. I brought her to school at 5:30 am (yes, ‘am’ means morning!) and since our office is close by and it takes me 30 minutes to drive home … I figured I could just as well go to work early and avoid the traffic jam later. For an online revolution, you need to be online

I watched the BBC program “How Facebook Changed the World: The Arab Spring” about the importance of social media in the changes happening in Egypt and other countries. (If you have couple minutes, search for it on YouTube). Clearly, being online and connected was the key for receiving information, sharing news, and organizing protests. Read more…

The proof: AVAST is one of the oldest AV companies

The first computer virus AVAST stopped was the Vienna virus back in 1988. That was before Symantec released its first product, acquired Norton in 1990, or even used the Norton brand to market its AV products.  It was also before Dr. Solomon’s Antivirus was commercially released in 1991 to be later acquired by McAfee (itself established in 1989). Shipping Wikipedia in 3 seconds

Last week on Friday September 16  – right ahead of the weekend – our servers had a good reason to celebrate.   They were delivering a record-high 4.5GB of avast updates to our users EACH SECOND.    AVAST has over 130 million active users, but of course not everybody turns on their computer every day.  On average, about half of all users turn on their machine every day and receive an update.  Friday was therefore not quite ordinary, as the 4.5 GB-per-second-traffic-fury lasted for 1 hour before subsiding to normal levels. American-avast-iPod-dad-free-passcode

If you don’t understand the title – don’t worry.  It should not make any sense and frankly I don’t understand it either.   But it does make a lot of sense to Google and its service called “correlate”. The old “if you’re not on Google, you don’t exist” is getting a whole new spin. Read more…

Piracy has health issues, but Talking Like a Pirate is risk free

Forget the glamor; piracy has a whole boatload of health risks. Pirates get hung out to dry, lead poisoning from being shot, or trash their computers from downloading a cleverly disguised batch of malware.

This is certainly not visible in the movies where the ‘bad guys’ such as Long John Silver or Captain Jack Sparrow seem to be the only ones having a good time.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day was designed to remedy the modern blues, creating a day (today, September 19) when people can talk or dress like a historical pirate in a safer, more modern environment. Just add an ‘Arrrggghhh’, ‘Ahoy’, and an erudite ‘Whar be me rum!?’ to the daily vocabulary.

At AVAST Software, we have an even easier solution. Add Pirate English to your avast! antivirus.

You have two simple options: Pirate audio or the Pirate GUI (with the audio). Read more…

Windows 8 developer conference

On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled more details about the future Windows 8 operating system at the BUILD developer conference in Anaheim, California and we could not miss out on this event! Avast has always been able to fully operate on every future Windows OS starting at the public Beta version and our users can rely on us regarding Windows 8.

Microsoft is going to redesign the classic Windows 95 interface and prefer a new “Metro” user interface which is optimized exclusively for touch-screen tablets. It will appear the same on laptops and desktops, too.

They will ship only one Windows version which will run on all Windows 8 PCs: Desktops, laptops, tablets, cell phones, big screens, and small screens. No more separated OS versions like in the past (see Windows and Windows CE/Windows Phone variants). Every desktop application should now support both interfaces – and so will avast! Read more…

Is free antivirus only for the poor?

Is free security only for the poor in developing countries?  Well let’s look at what the users think.

When AVAST users install the free antivirus, we use this opportunity to collect some research data on various subjects.   This particular research was based on over one hundred thousand responses collected during the last couple weeks. So, it is pretty solid data. Read more…
