Protecting over 200 million PCs, Macs, & Mobiles – more than any other antivirus

avast! 5 is coming… soon!

After a long time of keeping everything in secret, I’m glad that I can now disclose some preliminary information about the upcoming avast! version 5. The first thing to note is that the product is coming relatively soon. Namely, we’re currently planning to release it this October.

The product will be offered in three flavors: a free AV (that will supersede avast! 4.8 Home Edition), a paid AV (successor of avast! Professional Edition) and a full Internet Security suite. As usual, all customers (or users) with a valid avast! subscription will get a free upgrade to this new version.

The free AV will, of course, contain all the features from the existing Home Edition, plus a couple of new extras (I’ll be sharing more details on the blog as time goes by). The paid AV now includes a new virtualization module as well as all the features from the free AV and features previously exclusive to avast! 4.8 Pro. And finally, the suite adds an antispam and firewall module and will thus provide you with a complete, worry-free protection.

All three products will share the same antivirus engine (e.g. all of them will still have exactly same detection rates) that has been substantially improved and optimized. It may sound like a cliché, but it’s a fact: the new engine can detect more viruses, while actually consuming less resources.

The performance optimizations were not confined to the AV engine only; the program now uses various tricks to feel as light as possible and to not interfere with your work in any way. For example, we have radically improved the time it takes the computer to boot, making the slowdown imposed by avast! almost unnoticeable. I’ll be very interested in getting some feedback from you on this one (as soon as you get a chance to test it – please read on).

Starting with version 5, avast! now officially supports heuristics (proactive detection), although between me and you, many of the stuff has already been present in the previous versions – but we haven’t marketed it in any way. Also, detection of Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) has been added. Additionally, version 5 includes a new code emulator (or in fact, a dynamic translation module, to be technically correct) that will be of great help e.g. when unpacking malware samples packed/protected by unknown packers (as is the case pretty often).

All three products also feature a new user interface which has been completely redesigned for this new version. We’re abandoning the dual (simple vs. enhanced) UI model and replacing it with a single comfortable console, designed for both novice and experienced users. I’m attaching a couple of screenshots to give you an idea of what the product actually looks like.

The beta testing of avast! 5 will start in a couple of weeks (roughly by the end of July / beginning of August), so if you are interested to give it a try, please check back soon as I’ll be posting the details here on the blog as well as on our forums.

I certainly hope to learn more about the program in the future. I accidently got hooked up with that One Care thing and had to let go on this computer, about 3 days later I tossed it and got back my Avast! I trust you guys! Thank you!

So when Avast 5 is out will Avast 4.8 upgrade to Avast 5? Or will we have to pay to get Avast 5? I’m really curious, I have Avast Pro and well… I will pay for something but I won’t pay for upgrades. So please tell me if the Avast 5 is free upgrade for people who paid for 4.8 or whatever version other people are using.

Also when the beta is out where can i go to try it out?

It’s really very good news that Avast!5 is coming.. soon. I think it will be better that if you incorporate a firewall with the avast!5 free, it will be better helpful for all.

You are “abandoning the dual (simple vs. enhanced) UI model and replacing it with a single comfortable console, designed for both novice and experienced users”.
After looking at your samples, i have my doubts about that.
At least there better be advised choices to be made, or the choice to avoid some choices.
Of course we’ll have to see how it works out in practice.

God ( or Comrade – I am not sure what applies in that part of the world) bless you for your services especially the free edition. I am happy that you will be coming out with a more powerful engine in version 5. But, 2 points please – find a way to neutrilise ‘AutoRun.ini’ & related virus / spyware ( Avast cannot do it at present), secondly why do you not provide virus removal tools ?

    nightshade :
I don’t see a mention about supporting operating systems, will windows 98 S.E be supported for the Avast 5 for virus detection only, if not I suppose it’s not worthwhile testing the beta?

Sorry, avast 5 requires Windows 2000 or higher.

Hi, very nice interface. I have used Avast for four years and it is the very best. I also think that Alwil as a security company is a more serious company than other vendors generally are. Actually I paid for a three year subscription as I have been using the free version for years and wanted to promote this company. Now I am using the paid version in my pc at work as Norton did not work properly. On demand scanner and scheduled scanning worked only sometimes. So I instead installed this paid version that is Avast Professional Edition. This was in February. I often write reviews about Avast (especially at and I always gives it five stars.

I think that you are taking the right actions to increase market share. New nice interface, heuristic detection capabilities and a security suite. This will sell!

Some people, I have noticed, do not like the default skin that you have been using in earlier versions that looks like a radio player. They do not trust a antivirus software/company that has that kind of interface. That is silly but you know customers are customers even when they are wrong. So the new interface will probably satisfy those people. I myself like this new interface as well but I do like the radio player and some other skins too. I think that some other people share the same view. So I believe that you should have this new interface as a default skin but that the users should be able to download other skins if they wanted to. The skins has been a great part of Avast uniqueness and image and some peoples pro subjective feelings about this software. Especially young people. I will use Avast anyway but I will miss some of those skins. If you would make it possible to download other skins like the radio player you would satisfy both groups of people but it is important that this new skin will be the default one, otherwise the “serious” individuals will not use your fantastic software.

This is very good news. I only wish that you include an option of cleaning infected files. I recently saw that option with Rising antivirus. It has the ability to clean viruses without deleting the files. In that case you don’t lose your files as is the case with the current avast.

    July 23rd, 2009 at 12:34 | #38

Yes, Avast 5.0 must have similar features like 4.8 with an option cleaning infected files and other important options must be retained with the new Avast 5. Been using Avast for 5 years.

It is excellent to hear that Avast 5 will use less computer resources to do the same job–I was considering going to another AV to find one that uses less resources but after hearing about v5 I’ll stay with Avast. And the new interface looks great. I have never been a fan of the current Avast interface. All the changes sound great, and they are much needed. Great work!

I hugely appreciate the hard work put in by you guys at Avast! I had used several antivirus programs: beginning with Norton to NOD32. I really don’t want to begin a affaire d’honneur, but I convincigly say Avast is the best; not least for the unobtrusive way it works nor for the fact that it is gratis. For the past one year or so, since I installed Avast, I never had a crash in my system. I am connected a good part of the day to the net and surf a lot. I like the feeling that I am protected! Thank you folks.
